Yalumba Oxford Landing GSM
GSM is the flagship wine of Yalumba's entry level wines. We hosted an event last year with the winery manager and have been a great admirer of this wine since then. This is an increasingly common blend so I thought that you might be interested in what the different grapes contribute to the final flavour!
GSM is a name commonly used in Australia for a red wine consisting of a blend of Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvèdre. This blend originated from those used in some Southern Rhône wines, including Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Grenache is the lightest of the three grapes, producing a pale red juice with soft berry scents and a bit of spiciness. As a blending component, it contributes alcohol, warmth and fruitiness without added tannins. Shiraz can contribute full-bodied, fleshy flavors of black fruits and pepper. It adds color, backbone and tannins and provides the sense of balance that such blends require. Mourvèdre contributes elegance, structure and acidity to the blend , producing flavors of sweet plums, roasted game and hints of tobacco. At these prices this is a great everyday drinking wine.

Yalumba Y Series - Shiraz Viognier 2007
Most blended wines are made by blending two or more batches of wine, each separately made from a single variety. The winemaker strives to balance the weakness of one variety with the strength of the other to achieve a more rounded result.
Shiraz Viognier is named as if it is a blend, but in fact it is produced by a slightly different method. By contrast, Shiraz Viognier is produced by the method of co-fermentation. Here the red Shiraz grapes are mixed with the white Viognier grapes before the wine is made. The addition of white grapes at this stage is thought to preserve the brightness of the red pigments during fermentation, as well as altering the development of some of the flavour compounds.
This is a delicious wine with carefully balanced tannins. It is light enough to drink on its own but has enough body to go well with food.
